FACT:Behavior problems are on an increase in our schools and in our homes. Do you know what to do about them?

This course is presented by a licensed and doctorate level Pediatric Behavioral Specialist with over 25 years experience working with behavior problems in schools, child care settings, and homes. Learn the basics about:

  • Why children misbehave.
  • How to target problem behavior, such as anger, aggression, fighting, stealing, lying, biting, or cheating.
  • Developing an effective behavior plan that you can use with children in your care.
  • Why some strategies, such as time-out and stickers, don't always work.
  • Learn effective strategies that do work for specific problem behavior.

Plus, you can:

  • Earn continuing education credit (CEUs) if desired.
  • Email the instructor for personal advice.
  • Take as much time as needed to complete the course.
  • Retake quizzes or redo assignments until you achieve the grade you desire.

Behavior Management: When Time-Out & Stickers Don't Work with Catherine Swanson Cain is a course designed for educators, parents, and child care providers that teaches the common reasons behind young children's misbehavior, how to effectively handle misbehavior, and to identify common behaviors in young children.

This course is self-paced (course begins on student's own timetable). It is required that the student post a message in the Class Forum, submit class polls that are associated with each of the 5 lessons, post any questions or comments about child behavior to the professor and other students in the Class Forum, and if taking this class for certification of any kind, take the class final after ending lesson. Coursework consists of completing about 10 central lessons with attached documents, 4 related assignments and a number of class polls and netlinks for additional research. No grading policy will be implemented. Students who strive for course completion or other certified documentation might achieve several offered certificates according to attendance and participation.

Instructor Catherine Swanson Cain has a Ph.D. Education, specializing in Early Childhood Education, Special Education, and Administration who has over twenty years of experience in working in the field of early childhood/special education. Instructor Catherine Swanson Cain is also currently teaching The Amazing Brain: How & Why It is Connected to Behavior.


This course offers 1.0 CEUs upon successful completion. You may take this online course with or without CEU documentation. An online and hard-copy Certificate of Course Completion displaying your coursework and CEUs earned is included with the CEU Option. Course Lessons

  1. The Many Purposes Behind Misbehavior (Lesson 1) - Learn common reasons behind misbehavior, including child, family, and environmental factors. Also learn an effective method for identifying problem behavior so it can be addressed.
  2. Misbehavior and What It Looks Like (Lesson 2) - This lesson discusses common child behavior related disorders and the criteria for diagnosing children with these disorders.
  3. Controlling the Environment (Lesson 3) - This lesson talks about the things in the environment that affect child behavior, as well as your role as parent or teacher.
  4. Effective Behavior Management Technique (Lesson 4) - This lesson describes how to develop a behavior intervention plan that is research backed and highly effective.
  5. Bag of Tricks (Lesson 5) - A variety of behavioral interventions are presented that I call my "Bag of Tricks."
